Melinda performs all dental cleanings on dogs the old fashioned way.
Anesthetic-free hand scaling and polishing. This is a manual application of dental techniques in which Melinda was trained during her career as a veterinary nurse and dental assistant. With this technique the comfort and well being of the dog is first priority.
Success depends on the degree of tartar and disposition of the dog.
Prices range from $10-$15 for monthly maintenance, up to $120 for in-depth cleaning. Our dental cleanings are not performed on cats.
An evaluation of your dog is necessary before scheduling the cleaning, unless Melinda has seen your dog before. During this evaulation the safety and well-being of your dog is priority. Your dog may not be a good candidate for this type of cleaning if there is infection or serious periodontal disease, or if your dog does not tolerate this type of cleaning safely without the use of anesthesia. Not all dogs are suitable for this type of cleaning.
The dental cleaning process is as follows:
- A rinse with canine oral antibacterial solution
- Brushing with canine toothpaste to remove plaque and loosen tartar
- Hand scaling to remove tartar (in the same manner human dental hygienist scale our teeth)
- Polishing with antibacterial canine paste
- Final rinse with canine oral antibacterial solution
Regular at home maintenace is recommended to maintain good oral hygeine. Daily use of canine antibacterial oral sprays and wiping the inside of your dog's mouth between the cheeks and molars regularly will help keep bacteria to a minimum and prevent the onset of tartar and gum disease. Brushing your dog's teeth can sometimes be awkard and obtrusive. We recommend using a wet washcloth wrapped around your index finger, and instead of opening your dog's mouth, just pull out the side of their cheek and insert your washcloth wrapped finger, keeping their jaw closed. Concentrate on wiping the upper molar/cheek area, and the long canines on either side at the front.
Melinda's credentials and experience:
My career in the veterinary field began in 1995. I was fortunate enough to work for the past president of the Tarrant County Veterinary Association, George Siddons, DVM. Dr. Siddons specialized in canine dentistry and we actually performed dental radiography, dental restorations, and of course daily dental cleanings. Performing dental cleanings has been a part of my every day career as a veterinary nurse over the last 15 years.
